Euro 2012’s Group of Death – First Casualty?

Last night after Germany’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands showed the groups first victim (they can still qualify, although unlikely).

The game itself showed the contrasting styles of the rivals, whereas Germany were playing fluidly like the Netherlands of old, and the Netherlands were just poor, with no killer instinct and too many selfish players. The Germans controlled most of the game, looked the most lethal in front of goal when needing to and bossed the midfield, an area I thought (on paper) looked like it should have been the Dutch, but brilliant performances by Schweinsteiger and Ozil changed all that.

Germany are looking like a team that can go all the way here, solid defense and a striker who is scoring with the chances he’s given. Still early days and there are still big teams left to play their second games but I’ll bet my bottom dollar they’ll be in the semi finals minumum.

The Dutch however, weren’t as poor all over the park as the results show. They were poor upfront, van Persie could not score for toffee. He probably had more chances than Gomez had in the first 2 games, why wasn’t Huntelaar give more of a chance? I think Bert van Marwijk really messed up there. I can’t blame Robben for sulking, I just wouldn’t have made it quite as visible as he did. The Netherlands are crashing out of this competition in a blaze of shame. Is it van Persies fault? No, I think its Marwijks for not recognising and acting on van Persies lack of finishing.

Netherlands need to crush Portugal to progress, and that’s IF Germany beat Denmark. Maybe they can pull something special out of the bag now that they absolutely need to, but it doesn’t look that likely with Portugal needing a result themselves, and look to be in a better scoring form, however they did concede 2 against Denmark. So who knows.
