So, it finished 2-1 after Gerrard’s penalty strike after Suarez was hauled down. Overall it was a good points and in my opinion we were deserved winners. A bit shaky at the start and Villa were rightfully ahead after a beauty of a strike from the goal machine Benteke, but we soon crept in and took control of the game and it was just a matter of time before we were going to score, and in the 47th minute we did just that through Henderson.
Our control of the game continued and we could have made it 3 or 4 with both Suarez and Coutinho unable to get past Guzan one on one.
All in all, the performance of the reds today was solid and hardworking. The players were going for all the challenges and were fighting to get the ball back and composed with it, it was a really professional display, one that hasn’t been too consistent in the season but is starting to become more and more consistent these days, if that makes sense.
Coutinho, again, had a very good performance (See article on Coutinho) and it was visible how much he has grown in the team and there’s already a clear understanding out there with him and Suarez.
But the man of the match for sure was Steven Gerrard today not just for the winning goal but that stunning goal-line-sideways-lunging-header-clearance that kept us the 3 points. Yet another reason why he is known as Captain Fantastic.
Brilliant day all round.
